"Soho Afternoon"

We often see fleeting images of profound beauty that linger only in our mind’s eye. Photography can be a powerful tool for the artist who seeks to capture these moments. This workshop will increase your ability to paint what you want to see. Bonnie offers practical, effective exercises in light, color, composition and brushwork. Using studies and photographic references, students will learn the big picture approach to developing personalized paintings. Daily chalk talks and paint-along demos will enhance a lively, relaxed, and informative workshop experience. Demonstrations will be in oil, though acrylic and watercolor painters are also welcome.

As an author and artist, Bonnie Paruch is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America and has been featured in numerous national and international publications. A veteran of many group and solo exhibitions, her award winning paintings in oil and pastel are included in collections across the US. With her studio in Sister Bay, Door County, Wisconsin her work is represented by Edgewood Orchard Galleries.

Landscape Painting in Oil: The Artist’s View

“To see beauty where it isn’t always obvious brings great joy.” (Robert Wade)

This class is about learning how to “see” and to paint the landscape as you want it to appear. You’ll study how light affects color and value and practice how to see in black and white, using a three value system that is both practical and effective. Bonnie will guide you to see the “big picture,” avoiding the pitfalls of getting lost in details. You will learn to paint small studies “en plein air.” These little gems will inspire and inform larger works done in the studio. Daily demonstrations, chalk talks and gentle group critiques will enliven a relaxed and informative class. You’ll leave with all of the tools necessary to help you express your vision of the landscape.

Students of all abilities are welcome. Come prepared to paint outdoors on location (weather permitting) in addition to doing studio work.

Bonnie is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America. She wrote an article describing her plein air painting techniques for International Pastel Artist in 2002. International Artist recently included Bonnie in a group of “America’s leading landscape painters,” featuring her painting of the Algoma waterfront. She has been identified as an “artist to collect” in Southwest Art. Additional publications include American Artist (cover artist), The Artist, The Pastel Journal, North Light and the book, Best of Flower Painting Two. Bonnie leads popular painting workshops throughout the Midwest. She welcomes visitors to her studio in Door County and is represented by Edgewood Orchard Galleries in Fish Creek, Wisconsin.
