If you have ever considered picking up a brush, or if you are interested in experimenting with several new painting mediums, this workshop has been designed for you. Bonnie’s popular painting workshops frequently draw a wide variety of students, from beginners to experienced professionals. This basic class will offer an introduction to sketching, oil, watercolor and pastel painting, with an emphasis on “getting started.” Informal lessons, paint-along demonstrations and gentle group critiques will assist you as you learn at your own pace. You will work from life, using simple still life arrangements and photographs to practice drawing, color mixing, shape design and value placement. You can use this workshop as an opportunity to jump start a new endeavor or to reacquaint yourself with an “old friend.” You will receive a basic supply of all of the materials needed to explore the new mediums. The beautiful classroom and outdoor setting of The Clearing will inspire your creative spirit. This beginner class is designed for anyone who has wondered “I wonder if I’d like to paint or draw…?” Come and discover your creative side.

This class is about learning how to see and how to paint creative landscape and still life paintings as you want them to appear. You will study how light affects color and value. With an expanded knowledge of composition and design, you will practice constructing paintings that have a story to tell. Bonnie will guide you to see the “big picture” so you can learn to avoid the pitfalls of getting lost in details. Half of the class will focus on plein air painting at locations featuring the beautiful gardens of northern Door County. The remaining half of the class will be spent working in the studio from floral still life arrangements inspired by the lovely environment surrounding the Schoolhouse at The Clearing. Daily demonstrations, chalk talks and group critiques will enliven this relaxed and informative class. You’ll leave the class with all of the tools necessary to help you express your vision in the studio or plein air.

Come prepared to paint outdoors on location, weather permitting, in addition to the studio work. A portable sketch box style easel is required. All levels of experience are welcome.
